his trip begins just downstream from the Taos Box run on the Rio Grande
River. The first few miles are calm as the river enters the Orilla
Verde Recreation Area. Orilla Verde, in Spanish, means "green
banks", which perfectly describes this section of river. Popular
with fishermen and birdwatchers, this is a lush, quiet section of
the river, perfect for a relaxing morning float. After lunch, you'll
be ready for a little excitement, which you'll get on the "Racecourse"
section.

Winding
through the heart of Northern New Mexico, the Rio Chama is one of
this states real treasures. Designated one of America's "Wild
and Scenic Rivers", the Chama is a wonderful river adventure.
You will have plenty of time for drifting and swimming during the
day, as well as hiking some of the many side trails. The camping is
exceptional on the Chama, with most sites nestled among large trees
and featuring wonderful views of the sandstone cliffs which line the
river. The Chama is a favorite among New Mexico fishermen; remember
to bring your pole and a current fishing license. All meals are provided
during the trip. Since the Rio Chama is a permitted river and flow
is regulated by El Vado Dam, there are only specific dates on which
it is runable.
